NY-PENN LEAGUE Jammers snap M.V. win streak

Published: Thu, July 7, 2005 @ 12:00 a.m.

The Scrappers had won five straight entering the game.

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers' five-game winning streak came to a halt Wednesday night with a 6-4 loss to the Jamestown Jammers.

A five-run second inning by the Jammers was the difference. The Scrappers helped Jamestown's cause with a costly error that allowed two runs to score.

The loss dropped the Scrappers out of their first place tie with the Jammers in the Pinckney Division of the New York-Penn League. Jamestown improved to 10-6, while the Scrappers fell to 9-7. Mahoning Valley is 5-2 on the road this year.

The Scrappers trailed 6-0 after two innings, but scored one run in the third and three in the eighth to make it close.

Jamestown scored its first run in the opening inning on an RBI single by Jamar Walton. Marcos Cabral opened the second inning by hitting a solo home run, then the Jammers loaded the bases on a single by Trent D'Antonio, a bunt single by Greg Burns and a walk.

James Guerrero then hit a grounder to first base, but Steve Head threw wildly to second base, allowing two more runs to score. A sacrifice fly and single by Walton added the final two runs.

The Scrappers got one back in the third as Julio Garcia walked and Trevor Mortensen singled to open the inning. Jose Constanza then hit into a double play with Garcia moving to third and he scored on a wild pitch.

Scrappers pitching blanked the Jammers after the first two innings. Starting (and losing) pitcher Ryan Edell settled down and stopped Jamestown in the third and fourth, followed by Mark Jecmen and Nelson Hiraldo.

In the eighth inning the Scrappers tried to get back into the game. Peterson had an RBI single and Boodle Clark scored another run on a wild pitch.
