Led by Head's hits, Scrappers top 'Dogs
BATAVIA, N.Y. -- Stephen Head, a second round draft pick from the University of Mississippi, slammed a pair of home runs, a double and single and drove in seven runs as Mahoning Valley defeated Batavia 16-3 Sunday night.
Mahoning Valley pounded out 17 hits, while Trevor Crowe and Chris Clem getting three each, and Jose Constanza and Boodle Clark each a pair.
Crowe also homered.
The Scrappers jumped out to a 9-0 lead as they ripped Batavia starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco for nine hits and all nine runs, eight of them earned.
Mahoning Valley starter Jensen Lewis (1-0) held the Muckdogs scoreless through the first four innings, before giving up two runs in the fifth.
Relievers Jose Amaya and Matt Lobert pitched the final four innings, allowing just four hits and one run.
Head homered in both the first and second innings, while Crowe's homer came in the first inning on the first pitch from Carrasco.
Lewis has not allowed an earned run in two outings this year. Head's seven RBIs tied the Scrappers team record set in 2001 by Mike Edwards, now playing with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
