SALEM -- The Rev. John Pierce has been appointed senior pastor of Salem First Friends Church, 1028 Jennings Ave., and will take over his new position at Sunday worship services at 8:30 and 11 a.m.
The Rev. Mr. Pierce has served at First Friends Church as associate of family ministries/worship for the past four years, having come from a Kansas church where he was a youth pastor. He has been in the ministry for 10 years and was recorded as a minister of the Gospel in 1998 with the Mid America Conference of Evangelical Friends that included Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. He will be transferring his recording July 26 at a special service during the Eastern Region of Evangelical Friends annual conference.
Mr. Pierce earned his bachelor's degree in theology and religion from Barclay College of Haviland, Kan., and a master's degree in family ministries from Friends University of Wichita, Kan. He recently graduated from Liberty University with his second master's of theology/religion.
The pastor is joined by his wife, Joni, 11-year-old Jordan, 8-year-old Joshua, and Julia, who is 5.
Meanwhile, the Rev. Peter Fowler will begin serving as the associate and youth pastor at the church. He and his wife, Mandy, both graduated from Malone College in 2001.
The Rev. Mr. Fowler has been serving the teens of the Salem area since September of 2000 in the position of youth pastor at First Friends, organizing various youth ministry events and service mission trips.
