Woman killed, two firefighters are injured in apartment fire
COLUMBUS (AP) -- A child playing with a lighter started an apartment fire that killed his aunt and injured two firefighters, fire officials said.
The body of Michelle Williams, 36, was found Wednesday night in an upstairs bedroom of her two-story apartment, Battalion Chief Doug Smith said.
Williams' 5-year-old nephew started the fire while playing with a lighter in the basement of her apartment, Smith said. The blaze caused an estimated $125,000 damage.
The fire, confined to the apartment, started around 10 p.m. Wednesday and was contained in about 30 minutes, officials said.
Firefighter Herman Tidwell, 36, lost his mask and inhaled smoke while falling through the first floor of the apartment into the basement, spokeswoman Kelly McGuire said on Thursday. He was in stable condition Thursday at Riverside Methodist Hospital.
The second firefighter, Mike Thornhill, 37, suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from Riverside, McGuire said.
The other residents of the apartment complex were accounted for, Smith said.
