YOUNGSTOWN -- The city has taken steps to make sure residents and business owners continue getting discounts on their electric bills.
The board of control approved an amendment to a 2003 agreement between the city and FirstEnergy Solutions Corp., based in Akron, to provide electric services and supplies that will extend to Dec. 31, 2006.
The city buys electricity in bulk from FirstEnergy on behalf of electric users in the city. Ohio Edison Co. continues being in charge of distribution and transmission of electricity.
The amended agreement provides a 6 percent discount on residential electric bills and a 4 percent discount on the commercial electrical rate until February 2006. From March 2006 to December 2006, the discounts will be 4 percent for residential bills and 2 percent for commercial accounts.
This is called a rate stabilization plan. City officials did not have the dollar savings breakdown for residents and commercial users in the plan.
In May 2003, Youngstown residents approved a ballot item allowing the city to seek offers from bulk electricity suppliers. The city selected FirstEnergy.
