YOUNGSTOWN Crime statistics

Crime overall dropped in Youngstown last year. Police Chief Robert E. Bush Jr. credited the overall drop in crime to a zero tolerance approach to lawlessness and the aggressive work of the patrol division. Although homicides rose slightly, the number is still far less than the rate the city experienced 10 years ago, he said. In 1995, 68 homicides were recorded. Here's a comparison of crimes for 2003 and 2004:

Property crimes -- burglary, thefts, motor vehicle thefts and arson -- dropped to 4,419 in 2004 from 5,090 in 2003. The decrease is 13.1 percent.
