Giant Eagle, Hormel give hams to charity
Supermarket retailer Giant Eagle and Hormel Foods teamed up to donate 400 hams to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley for distribution to hungry families in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties.
"Giant Eagle and Hormel are longtime partners and donors to Second Harvest Food Bank, and we appreciate their ongoing generosity and this special donation of hams," said Michael Iberis, food bank executive director.
"We are committed to remaining an active participant in the ongoing battle against hunger," said Giant Eagle Manager of Community Relations Tina Thomson. "By leveraging the resources of our community and business partners, we are proud to be able to extend a helping hand to families that will be receiving these hams."
Second Harvest Food Bank provides food to 200 hunger relief agencies throughout Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties, including faith-based pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and shelters for battered women. In 2004, the Food Bank distributed 4.5 million pounds of food to hungry families in the tri-county area.
Giant Eagle was named America's Second Harvest 2004 Regional Retailer of the Year for its support of local Second Harvest Food Banks, including Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley and Mid-Ohio Food Bank.
