BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP McDonald's early lead holds up

McDonald had a 17-point lead in the first quarter of the Inter-County contest.

BERLIN CENTER -- Dan Hawout scored 20 points and McDonald jumped out to a commanding lead in the first quarter, then held on to defeat Western Reserve 64-60 in an Inter-County League game on Tuesday night.

McDonald remained unbeaten, improving to 9-0 overall and 3-0 in the ICL.

Mark Macali and Cory Vukovich added 11 points each for McDonald, which led 23-6 after the first quarter.

Western Reserve (3-7, 1-2) outscored McDonald in every ensuing quarter, including 25-18 in the fourth.

Dave Ferrando scored 18 points for Western Reserve and Bruce Christie chipped in 14.

Jackson-Milton 55, Bloomfield 39

NORTH JACKSON -- Nick Kaley led Jackson-Milton with 23 points and 12 rebounds, as the Bluejays evened their record.

Mark Balent added 15 points for Jackson-Milton (5-5), while Andrew Whitmer finished with nine assists and four steals.

Campbell Memorial 63,Lowellville 52

LOWELLVILLE -- Louie Samones recorded 19 points, making three 3-point field goals in the process, to lead the Red Devils.

Trey Soures added 12 points for Campbell Memorial and Teyon Harris scored 10.

Lowellville (5-5) was led by Vince Broll, who had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Mario Nero, who sank four 3-pointers, added 14 points and four assists. Broll also made three 3s.

Girard 65, Brookfield 62

GIRARD -- Nick Cretella led Girard with 24 points, four assists and three steals in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game.

Eric Stevens added 17 points and Lewis Starr scored 10 for the Indians. David Culp finished with 10 rebounds and Starr had eight.

Sam King's 19 points paced Brookfield. Cory Richards added 13 and Keith Saynn scored 11.

Lakeview 50, Newton Falls 46

NEWTON FALLS -- Mike Frangiamore scored 12 points and Eddie Mackiewicz added 10 for the Bulldogs (6-1, 1-0 TAC).

Lakeview led 23-9 at halftime before the Tigers (3-4, 0-1) came storming back. Newton Falls closed to within 33-27 after three quarters and got to within two in the final minute, but the Bulldogs made their free throws down the stretch.

Chad Rankin scored 13 points for the Tigers, Mike Pelyak added 11 and Troy Balint tallied 10.

Liberty 52, Hubbard 40

HUBBARD -- Brandon Cornwell led Liberty with 18 points and swiped four steals, as the Leopards improved to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the TAC.

John Humphrey added 11 points for Liberty, and Mychal Doblanski totaled 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Edward Kershaw also had four assists.

The Leopards held a 27-21 edge in rebounds, and did not allow the Eagles any offensive boards.

Russell Hawkins led Hubbard with 14 points and seven assists. Danny Trolio added 12 points.

Youngstown Christian 64,Cornerstone Christian 56

YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown Christian avenged a 21-point loss to Cornerstone Christian earlier in the season.

Dominic Vitullo scored 25 points for the Eagles and Edward Gonda III added 10.

Kevan Reynolds had 17 points and Jason Oates added 10 for Cornerstone Christian.

Sebring 69, United 59

HANOVERTON -- Dan Scarpitti and Joe James combined for 44 points to lead Sebring.

Scarpitti scored 24 points and James had 20 for the Trojans (7-1, 4-0 Tri-County League). Matt Ferguson tossed in 12 points.

United (5-3, 2-2) was led by Jake Roelen's 19 points. Bubba Taylor added 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Columbiana 66, East Palestine 55

COLUMBIANA -- Dave Vitko scored 18 points as Columbiana improved to 3-1 in the TCL.

Jared Patton added 15 points and eight assists for the Clippers (6-3 overall), and Eric Bailey scored 12. Eric Ostrander finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and five steals.

East Palestine (0-9, 0-4) was led by Brett Young with 25 points and Dan Harolt with 12.

Lisbon 51, Leetonia 42

LEETONIA -- Marcus Judy and Tim McClester scored 14 points each for Lisbon (7-2, 2-1 TCL).

Josh Grafton added 12 points and Dom Defilippo had 13 rebounds and four steals. McClester added eight rebounds and four steals, and Judy dished out six assists.

Jon Williams paced Leetonia (2-7, 0-3) with 11 points.

Crestview 66,Heartland Christian 59

NEW WATERFORD -- The Rebels earned their second win in 10 games behind Jerry Einseidel, who scored 24 points. Andy Walton added 11 points and five rebounds, Jordan Reynolds scored 10 points and Andrew Kestner picked up five boards.

Josh Osborn and Nate Wolford scored 16 points apiece for Heartland Christian (5-5), and Cody Peterson scored 11.

Southern 56,East Liverpool Christian 38

SALINEVILLE -- Josh Diaz totaled 20 points, 16 rebounds four assists and seven steals to lead Southern (7-3).

East Liverpool Christian was led by Dylan Varlan (12 points) and Rob McCoy (11 points).

Marlington 70, Salem 69

ALLIANCE -- Kyle Miller scored 16 points and Mike Stanek added 14 for Marlington (4-5).

Nate Prueter and B.J. Goodwin added 13 points each for the Dukes.

Jarin Heath led Salem (3-4) with 17 points, and Tommy Jesko and Tyler Pierce scored 14 apiece. Pierce also had 12 rebounds and Ryan Benchwick chipped in 11 points.

Shenango 74, Mohawk 56

BESSEMER -- Steve McNees scored 28 points and added 10 assists to lead Shenango (11-1).

The Wildcats' Shawn DeJohn finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, Brady Workman scored 13 and Ryan Grafton had 11.

Josh Crum tossed in 18 points for Mohawk (7-4). Matt Wier added 13 and Richard Colick scored 12.

Farrell 48, Laurel 47

NEW CASTLE -- Chris Blue's buzzer beater and carried Farrell to its 10th win in 12 games.

Ramone Williams led the Steelers with 20 points.

Mike Burkett paced Laurel (8-3) with 22 points and Corey Collins scored 11.
