ACTION officers elected

YOUNGSTOWN -- The following officers of ACTION (Alliance for Congregational Transformation Influencing Our Neighborhoods) were recently elected for 2005: the Rev. Eleanor Felder, Holy Bible Church of God, president; the Rev. Ed Noga, St. Patrick Church, Youngstown, vice president; the Rev. Michael H. Harrison Sr., Union Baptist Church, treasurer; and Jim Converse, Commonwealth Inc., secretary.

ACTION, a multicultural, multiethnic faith-based organization, said its purpose is to fight poverty, racism and economic and social inequities within the community through community organizing.

Sign topic of meeting

CORTLAND -- The city's planning, zoning and building commission will meet Wednesday for a special session -- in Champion Township. The commission will gather at First Place Bank, 4460 Mahoning Ave. N.W., at 5:30 p.m. to look at a sign similar to one the financial institution wants to put at its Cortland location.

The First Place Bank in Cortland is at 325 S. High St. The sign is at issue because of its LED lighting. There is no such similar sign in Cortland, and the commission has to determine if such a sign fits under the guidelines of the city's sign ordinance. Officials said the bank will demonstrate to the commission the brightness of the sign.

Church to hold breakfast

YOUNGSTOWN -- Christ Church Presbyterian, 1933 Canfield Road, will have a free sausage and pancake breakfast from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

For more information, call (330) 782-2611.

Board changes meeting

HOWLAND -- The board of education will meet at 6 p.m. Feb. 28 in the high school's Distance Learning Center, rather than at the board's administrative offices.

Also, the school district will conduct its final week of kindergarten registration Tuesday through Friday. Parents of children who will be 5 on or before Sept. 30 should go to the building they will attend (Glen or Springs) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to register their child. Bring a birth certificate, immunization record, custody or guardianship documentation if applicable, proof of residence, and a recent utility bill, insurance payment receipt or payroll check stub.

Downtown group to meet

HUBBARD -- The city's Downtown Revitalization Steering Committee will host a public forum at 7 p.m. Feb. 28 in city council chambers.

The workshop will include a presentation by the Urban Design Center of Northeast Ohio of preliminary sketches and renderings of downtown revitalization concepts. Residents are encouraged to attend and share their input.
