"A Night of Future Champions" will be held Saturday at Packard Music Hall.
WARREN -- "A Night of Future Champions" will be the theme at Packard Music Hall Saturday for an amateur card of at least 15 bouts, presented by the Warren Boxing Club.
Most of the bouts will feature boxers from P.C. Torres' Warren Boxing Club and Jack Loew's Southside Boxing Club in Youngstown. The two co-main events have Nate Adams from the Warren Boxing Club fighting James Barrett from Akron's Porter Boxing Club in a 175-pound matchup, and a super heavyweight match between Jeff Lampkin-trained Cecil Porter against Frank Tempesta, "The Fighting Warren Policeman," who has a huge local following.
The night's opener will have Ryan Davis of the Warren Boxing Club in a 75-pound Junior Olympic bout with Royce McCormack from Akron. Warren Boxing's Joey Mayhugh will take on Mitch Hall from the McDonald A.C. in a heavyweight three-rounder, and a battle of 68-pound Junior Olympians will have Alex Smith from Warren Boxing going against Alejandro "Popo" Salinas from the Southside Boxing Club.
Also, Devonte Wesson from Warren Boxing will fight Kaleb Nicks from Erie, Pa. in a 75-pound Junior Olympic bout.
The sixth bout could be one of the best of the night -- Miguel Gonzalez from Cleveland's Top Notch Boxing Club will square off against Ira McDowell from Porter Boxing Club in a 136-pound open battle between two of the nation's top amateurs. Gonzalez is on the verge of turning pro.
Junior Olympic bout
Also, in a Junior Olympic 105-pound bout Kaleem Vann from Warren Boxing will go against Eric Fisher from West Virginia; Southside Boxing Club's Charley Fagan and Adrian Ghisou from Erie, Pa. will battle in a 125-pound open bout, and Warren Boxing's Craig Hunt takes on Porter's Jose Rodriguez in an 80-pound Junior Olympic bout.
Jake McBride from Salem and the Southside Boxing Club will go against David Rodriguez from the Porter Boxing Club in a Junior Olympic 75-pound bout, and in J.O. 95-pound fight, Jamel Vann from the Warren Boxing Club will meet Juan Salinas of the Southside Boxing Club. Salinas, with 15 fights has been to the Nationals of the Junior Olympic Tournament.
Also included on the card are several open and novice bouts that include fighters from other Akron gyms against West Virginia based boxers. There is a possibility that other bouts could be added to the Saturday card with one of those having Campbell's Chris Hazimihalis in an open lightweight fight.
"We really want Hazimihalis on this card and we are seeking a proper opponent for him," said Torres.
General admission tickets are $10 and table tickets are $15. The doors will open at 6 p.m. with the first bout scheduled for 7.
