CRIME SCENE Three arrests made in North Side apartment
On Jan. 19, the residence was the site of a homicide.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Three arrests, two of them drug-related, were made at the apartment where a 17-year-old boy was shot to death last month.
Monday, members of the Street Crimes Unit converged on 930 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Apartment 39, with a warrant for a man known to frequent the apartment.
Police arrested 45-year-old Carl Sanders, no address given, on a charge of drug possession and took him to the Mahoning County jail, where a deputy found a bag of suspected crack cocaine in his pants. A new charge of possession of cocaine was then added.
One of the apartment's residents, Anna Marie White, 48, was issued a citation charging possession of drug paraphernalia (crack pipe). A visitor, Charles Ellis, 32, of Fairgreen Avenue was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear in court on a criminal trespassing charge and taken to jail.
The two men arrested Monday at Apartment 39 were arraigned Tuesday in municipal court.
Sanders' bond was set at $15,000; Ellis' bond was set at $3,000. Both will be back in court Feb. 15.
White failed to show for arraignment, and a warrant was issued for her arrest.
Monday's arrests were not the first time police had been to Apartment 39.
On Jan. 19, around 7:30 p.m., Zymond T. Bellard, 17, of Eastway Drive was shot and killed inside the apartment.
Bellard's 20-year-old girlfriend, Danetta Dent, told police that she was hanging out with Bellard and a female friend called Chi Chi at the apartment and they were smoking marijuana. Two men, who reportedly knew Chi Chi, arrived, hung out for a while then left. One returned and shot Bellard, who reportedly returned fire, according to police reports.
White told police when the shooting occurred she had been lying down in the bedroom watching TV when she heard two gunshots and then screaming. She also said she didn't know the victim and suspects had been in the apartment. On Jan. 20, Robert Parker, 24, of Youngstown was charged with the murder. Bellard's mother, Gwendolyn Bellard, has said Parker is Chi Chi's boyfriend.
