SALEM -- The Salem Community Center will be holding a Kids' Self-Defense Seminar from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday.
Steve Javens of Ohio Valley Martial Arts will be instructing children ages 6 and up about the fundamental principals of self-defense. The program is free. Registration is required at the SCC front desk.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Mentoring from the Heart is a new initiative that provides a chance for a caring adult to exercise their heart by serving as a friend and role model for 40 elementary and 60 middle school students in the Youngstown City School District.
Students and adults will meet in this school-based mentoring program designed to help children learn to overcome any obstacles or challenges and foster academic and social success. Schools serviced by this program are Cleveland, Jackson, Sheridan, Williamson Elementary schools and Hillman Middle School.
Funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Mentoring from the Heart is a joint effort of the Youngstown City School District, Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic and Recovery Restoration, Inc. in partnership with Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Mahoning Valley.

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County chapter of the American Red Cross will offer a class from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 13 to teach youngsters the basics of being baby sitters. The child will learn responsibility, leadership and professionalism skills as well as basic infant and child care, emergency first aid and how to save a life.
