BOYS BASKETBALL Stevens scores 14 in Girard TAC win

Indians take lead in second, hold off Hubbard late in 54-48 victory.

GIRARD -- Girard High took the lead in the second quarter, expanded it in the third, and held off Hubbard down the stretch, defeating the Eagles 54-48 in a Trumbull Athletic Conference boys basketball game Friday night.

Eric Stevens finished with 14 points and three steals for the Indians (4-12, 3-7), who outscored Hubbard 23-16 over the middle two quarters to take a 33-27 lead.

Lewis Starr had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Girard, while Chris Williams also scored 12 and Robbie Ginocchi had three assists.

Hubbard (3-12, 2-8) was led by Frankie Rosile, who scored 14 points, and Dave Ward, who added 12.

Newton Falls 59, Champion 52

NEWTON FALLS -- Chad Rankin tossed in 23 points to lead Newton Falls in a TAC game.

The Tigers (9-7, 6-4 TAC) held a 14-7 edge in the third quarter, expanding their lead to 41-32.

Tyler Kish scored 17 points for Champion (4-12, 1-9), while Mark Jackson added 14. Jack Gross finished with 10 points.

LaBrae 62, Brookfield 60

BROOKFIELD -- Jason Frederick and Todd Rowan combined for 42 points to lead LaBrae.

Frederick scored 22 and Rowan had 20 for the Vikings (12-4, 7-3 TAC).

Brookfield (8-8, 3-7) was led by Sam King, who poured in 34 points. King also had six rebounds and five assists for the Warriors. Keith Flynn added nine points and Corey Richards scored eight.

Kennedy Catholic 82, Reynolds 36

HERMITAGE -- David Jackson scored 20 points to lead Kennedy Catholic.

The Golden Eagles led 52-18 at halftime.

Brandon Mirizio added 16 points for Kennedy Catholic, while Jason Lane scored 12.

Shenango 71, Laurel 63

NEW CASTLE -- Kyle Monceaux scored 23 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked three shots to lead Shenango in a WPIAL Class AA game.

Shawn DeJohn added 19 points for the Wildcats (17-5, 8-3 Section 2), while Steve McNees scored 15 points along with 12 rebounds and eight assists.

Shenango took the lead with a 24-11 scoring advantage in the second quarter. That gave the Wildcats a 35-26 lead at halftime.

Laurel (13-7, 7-4) was led by Corey Collins, who finished with 26 points. Mike Burkett added 16 points and Tyler Womer scored 10.
