Senior Olympics coming to Mahoning Valley

Published: Fri, February 4, 2005 @ 12:00 a.m.

YOUNGSTOWN -- District XI Area Agency on Aging has teamed up with the Trumbull County Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Mahoning County Convention and Visitors Bureau for the upcoming Ohio Senior Olympics state championships to be held in late July and early August in the Mahoning Valley.

The agency already hosts the annual Senior Olympics of Northeast Ohio locally and was selected by the Board of Ohio Senior Olympics to host the state competition in 2005 and 2006.

Athletes 50 and older participate in the state competition in events ranging from archery to volleyball. Coordinator Joe Rossi says he expects between 300 and 500 athletes in 2005 and 1,000 in 2006.

The two convention and visitors bureaus will identify lodging opportunities and help locate appropriate sporting venues for the events.

For more information, contact the Area Agency on Aging at (330) 746-2938.
