CRIME Oak Street Super Market owner shot in ankles during robbery
YOUNGSTOWN -- The owner of Oak Street Super Market, 1804 Oak St., was shot in both ankles when two masked men robbed the market.
Cash and two handguns were taken.
Sami Abdeldayem, 59, of Oak Street, was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
The robbers, one black and one possibly white, wore nylon masks over their faces. A witness said the masks were similar to do-rags with holes cut out around the eyes.
Police who were sent to the store at around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday found Abdeldayem sitting on the floor behind the counter, bleeding from both ankles.
Abdeldayem told police that when the robbers entered the store they ordered everyone to hit the floor. Because the witnesses complied, descriptions of the robbers are sketchy.
One of the robbers jumped the counter and removed the cash drawer from the register. He then shot Abdeldayem.
Two guns that had been near the cash register were also taken, reports state.
A woman sitting in a car in the parking lot, waiting for her husband to come out of the store, saw the robbers approach on foot. She then saw one of the men, wearing a dark coat and blue jeans, point a gun over the counter at the store owner.
When the two men left, the woman ducked down so they wouldn't see her.
