Authorities still investigating death

Published: Thu, February 3, 2005 @ 12:00 a.m.

CANFIELD -- The death of a nun who was struck by a snowplow Jan. 22 at the Ursuline Motherhouse, 4250 Shields Road, is still under investigation, Sheriff Randall A. Wellington said Wednesday.

He said a coroner's ruling is pending in the death of 76-year-old Shirley Getz, who died a few days after the accident.

Reports show that Mathew A. Sweely, 43, of Briarwood Lane, Youngstown, was plowing a driveway at the Ursuline Motherhouse. He backed up about 10 feet and the plow hit the nun, who was walking across the driveway. Sweely stopped when he heard a noise and then moved the plow forward and saw the elderly woman lying in the driveway.

Wellington said there was a heavy snowstorm that weekend.
