What It Does
Here's a breakdown of duties the Trumbull County Sheriff's Department must provide under Ohio law, and a list of other services that will be eliminated or cut back under the department's current $5.4 million budget:
MANDATED DUTIES
County jail.Civil process (serving of legal papers, sheriff's sales).Criminal warrants.Sexual offender notification, registration.County court security.Prisoner transport -- locally and interstate extradition.Processing concealed carry weapon permits.Junk yard licensing.Records management and public access.Background records checks -- more than 10,000 in 2004.
ABOLISHED OR LIMITED
No road patrol.No detective division.No specialty services.Closing a portion of the county jail.Limiting to one day per week special checks required for nurses, school bus drivers and postal employees.Loss of reserve and special deputies who can't work when regular staff are furloughed.
