The Lowellville and Hickory standouts each got $500 scholarships.
SHARON, Pa. -- Amanda Nero, a Lowellville High graduate and Chere Marshall, a Hickory High graduate, were each presented with $500 scholarships Thursday at the Penn Ohio Athletic Club.
Nero will attend Slippery Rock University and Marshall will attend St. Bonaventure where they will continue their basketball careers.
Nero and Marshall compiled grade point averages of 3.9 and 3.4, respectively, in high school.
Sponsors 25 teams
Twenty-five teams -- 15 for girls and 10 for boys -- competed under the Penn Ohio Storm banner in grades 3-12.
Justin Magestro, executive director of the Penn Ohio Club, said, "The mission of the club is to promote amateur basketball in Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio and to foster an environment where the players, coaches and parents respect the values of character, hard work, sportsmanship, teamwork and academic excellence."
Athletes that played for Penn Ohio Storm are from Ursuline, Rayen School, Hubbard, Maplewood, Springfield, Mathews, Champion, Lakeview, Canfield, Boardman, Lowellville, Bristol, Mineral Ridge, Mooney, McDonald, Brookfield, Howland, Fitch, Salem, Badger and Crestview.
This summer, the Penn Ohio Athletic Club held a golf scholarship scramble at Sharon County Club and 20 teams played with proceeds given for scholarships.
In 2004, the Penn Ohio Storm 17-18-year-old basketball team won the AAU National Tournament at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.
