YOUNGSTOWN -- The Whole Man Ministries is sponsoring a back-to-school community block party from noon to 9 p.m. on Sept. 3 on Park Avenue, next to Wick Park, on the North Side.

The theme is Stopping the Violence. Guests will include mayoral candidate Jay Williams, Councilman Richard Atkinson, WRBP-FM music director Frankie Halfacre and WANR radio personality Michele Stevenson.

Other guests will include national recording artists Lucky Penny and Jareed Andrews.

Butler opens sales gallery

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Butler Institute of American Art has opened a Fine Arts Sales Gallery on the main level of the museum. It is located in the former gift shop, which has been moved to the Andrews Pavilion addition.

The sales gallery is currently displaying works by 15 professional artists. The artists themselves staff the gallery as volunteers and are available to meet interested visitors by appointment.

A variety of media, styles and prices are represented. A portion of each sale goes to the museum's free education programs and free admission program.

Want to be a docent?

YOUNGSTOWN -- Each year, thousands of visitors come to the Butler Institute of American Art. They are introduced to the museum and the world of art by a group of knowledgeable docents.

Docents are specially trained volunteers who guide visitors. If you are interested in becoming a docent, call the museum's education department at (330) 743-1711, extension 114. Classes begin Sept. 6 at 10 a.m.
