BERLIN CENTER -- The Berlin Township Volunteer Fire Department has received a $111,004 grant through the federal Firefighter Investment and Response Enhancement Act.

The award was announced by U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine, R-Ohio.

Fire Chief Rick Peppel said the money will go toward purchase of 30 sets of new firefighter turnout gear, new self-contained breathing apparatus for firefighters and a thermal imaging camera.

A new clothes washer and dryer for laundering the turnout gear also will be bought with grant revenue.

The grants are awarded through the Office of Domestic Preparedness, which is part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
