Celebration planned for 85 years of women's suffrage
WARREN-- A Women's Equality Day celebration will be held at noon Aug. 26 at Women's Park on Mahoning Ave. to observe the 85th anniversary of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave women the right to vote.
Speakers for the event include: Mayor Michael O'Brien of Warren; Madonna Chism-Pinkard, community relations director for WFMJ-TV; Liz McMahon Wozniak, executive director of the YWCA of Warren; and a representative from the Upton Association. A reception will follow at the Upton Association, 380 Mahoning Ave. NW.
The event is sponsored by the Trumbull County League of Women Voters, the Upton Association and the YWCA of Warren. The celebration is free and is open to the public.
The date of Aug. 26 was designated as Women's Equality Day due to the efforts of the late U.S. Rep. Bella Abzug, D-NY. She requested that there be "an annual commemoration of the suffrage victory and a reminder of women's continuing efforts for equality."
Those wishing additional information on the event should contact Eileen Catanzaro, communications coordinator, YWCA of Warren at (330) 373-1010, Ext. 12.
