AUGUSTA, N.J. -- Mike Woodson went 2-for-4 with a solo home run Wednesday to help the Mahoning Valley Scrappers win their second straight game, defeating the New Jersey Cardinals 4-2 in a New York-Penn League game.

The Scrappers (24-25) remain 21/2 games back of Auburn in the Pinckney Division standings. The Doubledays defeated Aberdeen 5-3 on Wednesday.

The Scrappers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Jose Constanza singled, stole second and scored on Matt Fornasiere's double. One batter later, Fornasiere scored on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Lytle.

Woodson's homer came in the top of the fifth, giving the Scrappers a 3-0 lead. Mahoning Valley added another run in the top of the seventh when Chris Clem singled and eventually scored from third on an error by New Jersey third baseman Randy Roth.

Mahoning Valley pitcher Joe Ness (3-1) started and got the win, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits with six strikeouts and a walk.

Roddy gets save

Thomas Cowley and Dustin Roddy each pitched two shutout innings with Roddy earning his fifth save of the season.

Evandy De Leon, Fornasiere and Constanza each had two hits for the Scrappers, who had 11 hits.

Quinton Robertson (0-1) started and got the loss for the Cardinals (25-24), giving up three runs (all earned) on seven hits.

The Cardinals scored both their runs in the fifth when Matt Wilkerson reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third on Jonathan Sivira's single. Sean Danielson then followed with a single that scored both runners.

Danielson, Roth and Sivira each had two hits for the Cardinals, who will play host to the Scrappers the next two nights.
