Safety alert: Don't burn until grass is green

Published: Wed, August 10, 2005 @ 12:00 a.m.

The Mahoning County Fire Chief's Association is urging all county residents not to burn fires of any kind until grass and other vegetation have turned green again.

While burning trash, building materials and yard waste are prohibited throughout most areas of Mahoning County, some communities permit small backyard cooking fires, the association said in a news release.

The association said that throughout July, many communities reported dried grass and mulch fires because of legal and illegal burning and inappropriate disposal of smoking materials.

Residents are reminded that they may be subject to civil liabilities if another person's property is damaged because of a fire they set gets out of control.

Residents who use small cooking fires are reminded that they must have control of the fire at all times and must be prepared to immediately extinguish the fire with a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby.
