Shooting victim in lake identified
The victim's car was found in the 2500 block of Market Street.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The woman shot to death and found floating in McKelvey Lake has been identified as 19-year-old Sierra Y. Slaton of Vestal Road, police said.
Slaton's mother, Rose Slaton, filed a missing person's report at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, telling police her daughter left the house at 12:40 p.m. that day. Sierra Slaton left her 2-year-old daughter at home when she drove off in a 1997 green Chevrolet Lumina with temporary tags, police said.
A security guard who had been taking a walk around the lake saw a body floating in the water and called police around 6:20 p.m. Sunday.
The car was found Monday morning in the 2500 block of Market Street and towed and held for detectives, said Lt. Rod Foley.
Foley said Detective Sgt. John Kelty has been tracking the victim's whereabouts leading up to the shooting and whom she may have been with at the lake.
Police spoke to a witness who had earlier reported gunfire in the lake area and saw a Chevrolet Lumina drive northbound on Liberty Road. The witness, who lives on Liberty Road, said he heard three shots and then someone say, "You know not to [expletive] with the G," and six or seven more shots, reports show.
The witness said the weapon sounded like a semiautomatic. The noise caused ducks near the lake to begin quacking and moving around.
Slaton is the city's 19th homicide victim of the year, a 46 percent increase over last year at this time when the city had recorded 13 homicides.
