Volunteer Services Agency, a United Way Agency, is a local resource for volunteer recruitment, placement and management for people of all ages in the Mahoning Valley. It sponsors three programs: The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, which helps people 55 and older use their life experience skills in their communities; Volunteer Service to Seniors, which provides assistance and companionship to the elderly living independently in their homes; and the Volunteer Center, which helps people of all ages connect with local nonprofit agencies that need volunteer assistance. Golden Strings Inc.: The group is having a summer camp for the mentally challenged people from Aug. 1-19 and would like volunteers to help with arts and crafts and field trips.
Heart Reach Accelerated Reading Program: People are needed to help with the instruction. This program runs from Aug. 1 through Sept. 1, from 9 a.m. to noon Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Park Vista Retirement Center: Volunteers are needed to help push the residents around the Canfield Fair from Aug. 31 through Labor Day (Sept. 5).
Taste of the Valley/Second Harvest Food Bank: People are needed to help set up, usher and sell tickets at this event today.
United Way/Day of Caring: Employee groups are asked to participate in various service projects around the community Aug. 31.
Volunteer Service Agency: People needed to be booth sitters at the Canfield Fair. Shifts available.
Butler Institute of American Art: Offering a class to prepare volunteers to become docents or guides for visitors. The class begins 10 a.m. Sept. 6.
Citizen Corps: Volunteers are wanted who are interested in aiding their community in the event of a disaster or emergency. Classes are available.
CityScape: A receptionist is needed to answer the phones and do light office duties. Computer skills are welcome.
Antonine Sister's Adult Day Care: Volunteers needed to assist with the daily activities of senior citizens. The center is in North Jackson.
Hope House Visitation Center: People are needed for child care during exchanges, monitoring visits, clerical and computer work.
Beatitude House: Several opportunities to baby-sit, be a child mentor, tutor adult women, provide computer instruction or be a receptionist.
Fellows Riverside Gardens/Mill Creek MetroParks: Volunteers needed to welcome those who would like to work in the gardens.
Arms Museum/Mahoning Valley Historical Society: People are needed to do clerical work and mailings, handle museum materials or work in the archives and library.
American Red Cross Blood Services: Volunteers are wanted to assist at the blood drives by helping with registration or in the canteen.
United Methodist Community Center: People are welcome to help with the youth and adult programs run there.
Volunteer Services to Seniors: Caring individuals are needed to assist senior citizens who want to remain independent in their own homes. They can help by taking them grocery shopping, to a doctor visit or by providing telephone reassurance.
