Poland softball team wins state LL crown

ENGLEWOOD -- Winning pitcher Jessica Rutana tossed a one-hitter, striking out seven batters, as the Poland 9-10 softball team defeated Portsmouth West, 3-2, on Wednesday to win the state Little League title.

Rutana, Meredith Testa and Emily Chandler each had two hits as Poland finished the state tournament with a 4-0 record.

Baseball

INDIANAPOLIS -- Cory Hill tossed a three-hitter and struck out eight batters as the Youngstown 14-year-old Babe Ruth All-Star team defeated Kentucky, 7-1, in the regional tournament.

Jamie Shephard hit a two-run homer and a solo homer while Jason Bagoly's three hits included a double. Anthony Franceschelli had two hits.

Youngstown, the winner's bracket champion, awaits the survivor of the loser's bracket. The tournament winner will advance to the World Series tournament that will be in Boston from Aug. 19-27.
