YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County residents have the chance to get rid of unwanted passenger car tires for free Saturday.
The Mahoning County Reuse and Recycling Division, Youngstown Litter Control & amp; Recycling and Cardinal Tire Products are sponsoring a tire amnesty day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Cardinal Tire's headquarters, 1130 Performance Place on Poland Avenue.
Residents can bring up to four passenger car tires per household to be recycled for free. No business tires will be accepted.
Tires can be dropped off based on the first letter of the resident's last name at these times:
UA-F: 9 to 11 a.m.
UG-N: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
UO-Z: 1 to 3 p.m.
Additional fees apply for nonpassenger tires or when exceeding the four-tire limit. For example, each additional passenger tire brought carries a $2 fee.
The rubber and other materials from tires can be recycled into mulch, tire-derived fuel, playground surfaces and rubberized asphalt, recycling officials said.
