The Expos defeated Mahoning Valley 5-1 in Vermont.
BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Despite suffering their fourth straight setback, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers remain in first place in the Pinckney Division standings of the New York-Penn League.
Monday, the Scrappers (20-21) lost to the Vermont Expos, 5-1, at Centennial Field.
During the four-game skid, the Scrappers have scored just five runs.
The Expos (14-27) scored solo runs in the second, third and fourth innings to wipe out an early 1-0 Mahoning Valley lead.
The Scrappers got on board first after Matt Fornasiere led off the second inning with a double to right field. One out later, he scored on Andy Lytle's RBI single.
Omar Casillas led a seven-hit Mahoning Valley attack with three singles.
The Expos, with the worst record in the NYPL, had four players with a multi-hit game.
Leading 3-1, Vermont scored twice in the last of the eighth to put the game away.
The Expos used a double, two singles, a walk, a sacrifice fly and a fielder's choice to score two runs.
Deters gets loss
Jim Deters pitched the first five innings for the Scrappers and was tagged with the loss. Deters yielded six hits and three runs, all earned. He struck out five and walked four.
Thomas Cowley came on in relief of Deters and pitched the final three frames. He allowed two earned runs and four hits.
Second-place Auburn (19-21) lost to Staten Island 9-3 Monday and is 3-7 in its last 10 games.
The Scrappers finish their three-game series at Vermont tonight and have an off day Wednesday.
Thursday, the Scrappers begin a six-game homestand, facing two of the top teams in the McNamara Division -- Staten Island and Brooklyn.
