Champion alive in Musial event

Penn-Ohio and MTC Knights have been eliminated.

WARREN -- Champion Molded Plastics is the only Warren AA Baseball team remaining in the 2005 Stan Musial tournament.

Penn-Ohio and the MTC Knights were eliminated, with the former squad losing to Champion Molded Plastics, 3-2 in 10 innings.

Despite a three-run rally in the ninth inning, the MTC Knights lost to the Lake County Knights, 8-7.

The Knights also lost to Canton Stallions, 14-6, to finish the tournament at 1-2.

The Stallions had 28 hits, including three home runs.

A veteran of the Stan Musial tournament for more than a decade, 48-year-old Roger Begue picked up the win on the mound, pitching the first 51/3 innings, striking out six.

In two games, the Stallions' Jamie Palumbo went 6-for-11 with a home run, a double, two runs scored and seven RBIs.

In the first division, the Cleveland Nature Stone Bulls defeated the Ellet Shockers, 9-1.

Jeff Tillman of the Bulls hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning and had a second-inning double. Starting pitcher Eric Smith threw the first six innings for the win.

Other offensive standouts were Rick Shimko (3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs), and Ty Furino and Marty Healy with two hits each.

Brett Higgins had three hits and two RBIs during the Bulls' game against Youngstown Penn-Ohio.

Little league softball

ENGLEWOOD -- Jessica Rutana struck out 12 to lead the Poland 10-under softball team to an 8-2 win over Englewood in the state Little League tournament Sunday.

Poland (2-0) will play Portsmouth West today in the double-elimination, five-team event.

Emily Chandler led Poland with three hits while Sami Semach, Meredith Testa and Rutana each had two hits.

18-under softball

MINERAL RIDGE -- Stevie Banks and Kaili Gehring combined to pitch a three-hitter as the Roller Reprographics 18-under softball team defeated the Ohio Stars 3-1 to win the Mahoning Valley tournament A Division championship.

Lindsay Urban, Kaye Bruss and Gina Brunetti triggered the Reprographics with key hits.

Lauren McGivern scored Ohio Stars' run.

The Roller team defeated Howland 1-0, Crestview 7-0 and the Ohio Stars 7-0 before losing to the Stars 6-1.

Team members are Katie Garland, Alesandra Perry, Jaymi Payne, Skye Walley, Carolyn Ross, Gina Fabian, K.C. Knopp and Megan Lileas.

NABF College Regional

YOUNGSTOWN -- George Neiman and Mike Burger homered to help the Pittsburgh Pandas beat the Youngstown Metros 6-3 in the championship of the NABF College Regional tournament at Pemberton-Donnell Park.

The Metros (31-16) led 3-2 with two out in the top of the seventh inning before the Pandas collected four consecutive infield hits.

The Pandas will play in the NABF World Series in Toledo.

Brent Parks doubled and Cliff Panezich tripled to lead the Metros.

Class AA League

YOUNGSTOWN -- Scott Bender tripled to help the Youngstown Metros defeat Tri-County 5-1 in the Class AA League championship series.

The Metros won the best-of-five series in four games.

Dave Yost yielded five hits with four walks and four strikeouts in seven innings to get the win.
