Answers to weekly quiz:

Answers to weekly quiz:

Q. Vulnerable, you hold:

x-9 7 6 3 u-J 8 6 2 v-A 6 2 w-7 6

Partner opens the bidding with two no trump (20-22 HCP). What do you respond?

A. You have enough for game. But three no trump is not necessarily the right spot. If partner has a four-card major, your ruffing values in clubs could make the suit contract superior. Bid three clubs, Stayman, to hear if opener has a four-card major.

Q. Vulnerable, as South you hold:

x-A 8 6 5 u-A 7 5 4 v-A Q w-A 8 3

The bidding has proceeded:

SOUTH WEST NORTH EAST

1w Pass 1x Pass

?

What do you bid now?

A. Your lack of intermediates is a minor flaw, but it is more than compensated for by the fact that you hold all four aces. That makes your hand worth some 19-20 points in support of spades. We would jump to four spades, especially since the vulnerable game bonus is attractive.

Q. Vulnerable, you hold:

x-A Q J 7 u-K 6 v-A Q J 4 w-J 8 7

The bidding has proceeded:

SOUTH WEST NORTH EAST

1v Pass 1x Pass

?

What do you bid now?

A. The strength of this hand is misleading -- if you removed the two black jacks it would not really alter its worth in support of spades. Also, it is a six-loser hand, and there is no reason to expect partner to cover three of those. Make an invitational jump to three spades.

Q. Vulnerable, as South you hold:

x-9 6 5 u-K Q 10 6 v-10 7 6 w-9 8 5

The bidding has proceeded:

NORTH EAST SOUTH WEST

1v Pass 1u Pass

2NT Pass ?

What action do you take?

A. You have as little as the law allows for your initial response. Partner's jump to two no trump is invitational, not game forcing. Decline politely. Pass.

Q. As South, vulnerable, you hold:

x-10 7 u-A Q 4 v-A K 10 w-K Q 10 7 3

The bidding has proceeded:

SOUTH WEST NORTH EAST

1w Pass 1x Pass

2NT Pass 3x Pass

?

What action do you take?

A. It might seem that partner dislikes no trump and has a weak hand with long spades, and would like to get out of the auction. Nothing could be further from the truth -- no one is good enough to be able to tell the hand can make exactly nine tricks in the suit and not eight or nine at no trump. South is offering a choice of games so, with only two spades, bid three no trump.
