SOFTBALL Poland, Springfield post key league wins

Fitch pitcher Jen Purnell shut out Federal rival Perry.
POLAND -- Jenna Susany and Jenna Medina teamed up to pitch a two-hitter Thursday as the Poland High softball team defeated Salem, 8-0.
Susany struck out nine batters while Medina, Ashley Conger and Allie Patton each had two hits for the Bulldogs (16-0, 8-0 Metro Athletic Conference). Patton drove in two runs.
Brittany Gregory and Jess Matthews had Salem's hits.
Fitch 2, Perry 0
MASSILLON -- Jen Purnell tossed a five-hitter and struck out five batters for the Falcons (6-4, 4-4 Federal League).
Kate Feree doubled home both Fitch runs. Purnell doubled and Nicole Smaldino singled for the Falcons' other hits.
Perry is 5-5, 4-3.
Springfield 8,Western Reserve 0
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Krista Snyder and Colleen Platt combined to pitch a six-hitter as the Springfield High girls softball team clinched a tied for first in the Inter-County League.
The Tigers (15-4, 8-1) scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
During the rally, Heather Snyder hit a three-run double and Chelsea Quimby hit a two-run double.
Snyder worked four hitless innings for the Tigers, allowed four hits, with four strikeouts.
Platt (8-2) came on in relief in the fifth and allowed two hits with one strikeout to pick up the win.
Christie Warren hit a pair of singles and scored once.
Quinn McCammon paced the Blue Devils (12-6, 6-4) with a double and single.
Marlington 8, West Branch 2
ALLIANCE -- A five-run sixth inning was the difference as the Dukes (13-1) posted their 10th straight victory in the Northeastern Buckeye Conference.
Rachal Schmidt hit a double and single for the Dukes.
The Warriors (5-11, 1-9) were paced by Bri Benedict, Evelyn Woods and Vana Morgan who each doubled.
