Boy, 10, charged in killing

IOLA, Kan. -- A 10-year-old boy was charged Wednesday with murder in the shotgun slaying of his father. Robert D. Hamlin, 42, who was found dead on a couch at home. Deputies found the boy a quarter-mile away with a 20-gauge shotgun. The boy was charged as a juvenile and could be held until age 23 if convicted.

hBuried treasure found

NEW YORK -- Tim Crebase, above center, holds a sample of the vintage bills he and friend Barry Villcliff, right, found at the New York house of Kevin Kozak, left. Digging out a tree Wednesday at Kozak's house in Methuen, Mass., Crebase found a box stuffed with cash and gold and silver certificates, some more than a century old. The treasure is estimated to be worth as much as $75,000.

Putin visits Jerusalem

JERUSALEM -- Greeted by beaming Israeli officials, Vladimir Putin on Wednesday became the first Kremlin leader to visit the Jewish state, capping a historic rapprochement between two nations that once faced each other as bitter enemies across the Cold War divide. Putin, on his first Middle East trip, was also hoping to restore his country's profile as a major player in the region and the world.

Train, bus collide; 35 die

POLGAHAWELA, Sri Lanka -- An intercity passenger train collided with a bus that tried to dash through a railroad crossing Wednesday, killing 35 people, officials said. The passenger bus, apparently racing another bus, slipped past a warning gate and tried to cross a railroad track. Police said they arrested the driver of the bus.
