Published: Tue, April 19, 2005 @ 12:00 a.m.

Parris N. Glendening will speak about creating and nurturing urban centers.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Former Maryland Gov. Parris N. Glendening, a nationally recognized expert on neighborhood growth, will be the keynote speaker May 3 at the Wick Neighbors Inc.'s annual meeting and dinner.

Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 343 Via Mount Carmel Ave. The event is cosponsored by Youngstown 2010.

Glendening is president of the Smart Growth Leadership Institute, a project of Smart Growth America. The national organization is a coalition of nearly 100 advocacy organizations that have a stake in how metropolitan expansion affects quality of life, economic stability and the environment.

His talk will address creating and nurturing urban centers, encouraging new mixed-used development and redevelopment in already built areas as well as reusing abandoned properties.

Award winner

During his two terms as governor, Glendening received several awards, including the American Society of Landscape Architects' Olmsted Award and the Harvard Innovations in American Government Award. He also was named Public Official of the Year by Governing Magazine based on his Smart Growth program.

Wick Neighbors has completed the Wick District-Smoky Hollow redevelopment plan, aimed at reviving the city's Smoky Hollow area. The $250 million mixed-income, mixed-use project features a three-acre central park; more than 500 townhouses, condominiums, single-family homes and apartments; commercial and retail space; senior citizen housing; and office space.

The goal is construction of the first homes and renovation of some homes in 2006. Wick Neighbors Inc. is a nonprofit development corporation formed in September 2003.

Tickets are $25 per person, and the reservation deadline is April 27. To make reservations or for more information, contact Wick Neighbors Inc. at dougherty@wickneighbors.org or call (330) 259-1750. Make checks payable to Wick Neighbors Inc. and mail to Wick Neighbors Inc., 323 Wick Ave., Youngstown, Ohio, 44503.
