Group hosts fund-raiser

Warren Association plans Packard concert
WARREN -- Warren Civic Music Association concludes its 64th concert season with a performance by The Burning River Brass at 7:30 p.m. April 18 at Packard Music Hall. Tickets will be available at the door or by calling (330) 841-2931. Cost is $21.50 for adults and $6.50 for students. The 12 Cleveland-area musicians of BRB, one of the most respected brass ensembles in the country, have been dazzling audiences since 1996. They named their group for the infamous Cuyahoga River.
Koral gives free concert
YOUNGSTOWN -- New York recording artist Bari Koral will perform a free concert at noon April 27 at Youngstown State University's Peaberry's Caf & eacute;. The Long Island native has shared the stage with Lenny Kravitz, Norah Jones, India.Arie, Lisa Loeb, Jeff Buckley, Joan Osborne and the now-popular country act Blue County. She was voted one of the best acts of the new year by Newsday and was picked as among the most likely to succeed by New York's Village Voice . Songs from her records have been used the NBC hit show "Providence," the We and Oxygen networks and several feature films.
Ohio Ballet plans visitto Powers Auditorium
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ohio Ballet's Springfest performance in Youngstown will be at 7:30 p.m. May 14 at Edward W. Powers Auditorium. The program will include Cynthia Gregory's "le Grand Pas Classique," the timeless French pas de deux handed down to the prima ballerina from members of the Paris Opera; Jose Limon's "The Mazurkas," a classic modern dance; Victoria Morgan's "Peter and the Wolf," a modern-day spin on the classic tale of a boy who becomes a hero; and Sam Watson's "Hi-Jinks," a comedic and hi-energy ballet inspired by the dance in TV variety shows of the '50s and '60s. Monthly dance date set
Youngstown -- The Youngstown-Warren Amateur Ballroom Dancers Association, the local chapter of USA Dance, will have its monthly dance April 17 at the OCCHA Hall, 3660 Shirley Road. Showtime at the Apollo
When: noon to 3 p.m. April 17.
Where: 719 Liberty Avenue (Benedum Center Stage Door). The waiting line will extend down Tito Way, the alley behind Benedum Center. Performers should be prepared to wait outside and dress appropriately for the weather.
Criteria: Any kind of act OK; performers must be amateurs at least 5 years old and will have 90 seconds to audition. Profanity is prohibited. Only a piano, CD player and tape player will be provided. No pre-registration or audition fee.
Details: Open call, first-come, first-served. Only the first 300 acts will be seen. About 15 acts will be selected to perform on at 7:30 p.m. May 22 at the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts. One winner will receive $1,000 cash prize, two round-trip American Airline tickets to New York and an invitation to perform at the world-famous Apollo Theater, and may earn a spot on the nationally televised "Showtime at the Apollo," based on the original Apollo Amateur Night.
