SOFTBALL Tigers turn back Raiders in ICL game

Western Reserve took a 12-1 lead in a win over McDonald.

NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Christi Warren hit a home run in the first inning, then hit a two-run shot in the fifth as the Springfield High softball team topped South Range 3-1 Tuesday in an Inter-County League game.

Colleen Platt (1-0) worked five innings, allowed a single and struck out two to pick up the win.

Krista Snyder pitched two hitless innings and struck out two for the save. Ashley Fagnano went 2-for-3 for the Tigers (3-1, 2-0).

The Raiders' Skye Walley (1-3) allowed six hits in a losing cause.

Western Reserve 17, McDonald 6

McDONALD -- Western Reserve (3-0, 1-0 ICL) sent 15 batters to the plate in the first inning as it took a 12-1 lead.

Katie Harmon (2-0) pitched a complete game to pick up the win. McKenzie Mowery hit a pair of singles while Andrea Martin hit a double and a single for Western Reserve.

Jackson-Milton 2,Lowellville 1

LOWELLVILLE -- Krista Kiraly (2-1) struck out 11 batters and walked three for the Blue Jays.

Kay Bruss doubled for the Bluejays (2-1, 1-1 ICL) while Kortney Gherardi had two RBIs with a single and a sacrifice.

For the Rockets (1-2, 0-1), Julie Peterson had two hits.

Mineral Ridge 12,Girard 6

GIRARD -- Winning pitcher Kaili Gehring had a double and three RBIs for the Rams (3-1). She struck out eight batters and walked two.

January Golden had three hits and scored three runs, Melanie Sparks had three RBIs and Katie Garland had a two-run double.

For Girard (0-4), Sarah Britt had two RBIs.

Canfield 3, Struthers 0

CANFIELD -- Tricia Bettura (2-0) tossed a two-hitter for the Cardinals (5-1, 1-0 Metro Athletic Conference).

Brianne Halfhill's two hits included a double and she scored two runs.

Stephanie Zunic and Courtney Porter both had two hits including doubles, with Porter driving in two runs.

For Struthers, Amanda Ruozzo had both hits.

North Canton Hoover 4, Boardman 1

NORTH CANTON -- The Spartans (4-2, 0-1 Federal League) committed four errors. Ashley DiDomenico (3-2) tossed a four-hitter.

Massillon Perry 4, Fitch 0

AUSTINTOWN -- Jen Purnell fired a 3-hitter and struck out 12 batters as Fitch opened its season in a Federal League game.

Perry (2-0, 1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning and never looked back.
