One man was fired at twice within an hour.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The tally since Sunday: one dead, five wounded.
Devin Brown, 20, of Brooklyn Avenue was found lying on his side in the 100 block of Brooklyn near Cottage Grove, not far from his South Side home, around 12:15 a.m. Thursday. He was shot in his left arm and the bullet exited his upper back, reports show.
Because of the pain, Brown wasn't able to tell police anything more than his name and date of birth. He was listed in critical condition Thursday in St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Two friends who were with Brown told police they were walking east toward Southern Boulevard when shots were fired from a black car heading south on Southern. The witnesses said many shots were fired, likely from different types of guns.
The witnesses said it appeared Brown was the target. They ran and hid under a truck parked at Nemenz Fruit Market at 87 Brooklyn. Brown, after being hit, ran and then collapsed in front of 109 Brooklyn, police said.
At the time Brown was shot, two bullets hit the side of a house in the 60 block of Brooklyn. One bullet dislodged plaster and almost entered the house. No one was injured.
Earlier, at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, Burrell Jarmon II, 44, of Nelson Avenue was shot in the leg while walking near the corner of Jacobs and McGuffey roads on the East Side, police said. Jarmon told police he heard three shots and then realized he'd been hit.
Also on Wednesday, at 5 p.m., 17-year-old Kevin Stephens was shot in the left leg on Orrin Avenue on the North Side as he reached into the trunk of a car to remove clothing his sister wanted him to carry, reports show. While taking Stephens to St. Elizabeth's for treatment, his friends' car broke down on Fairgreen Avenue, just west of Fifth Avenue. The friends, with whom Stephens had been playing basketball, got another car and took him to the hospital, reports show.
"I got problems with people on the street," Stephens told police, refusing to say more.
At 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Ernest Cottle II, 20, of Bryson Street was shot in the right leg while walking on Covington Street on the North Side. Cottle said he heard shots but didn't see who fired.
Cottle told police that an hour before, around 4:30 p.m., six or seven shots were fired at him from a car while he sat on a porch in the 600 block of Fairgreen Avenue, also on the North Side. He ran into the house and escaped being hit.
Earlier Tuesday, Alfonso Flores, 5, was shot in the legs around 3:50 p.m. as he played outside his father's home on East Judson Avenue on the South Side. He was the victim of a drive-by shooting but not the intended target, police said.
At 2:45 a.m. Sunday, Cortland R. Brown, 28, of Willis Avenue was found dead in the driver's seat of a 1996 blue Thunderbird in the rear lot of the private club at 571 Francisca Ave. He had been shot in the arms and midsection.
His relationship to Devin Brown, if any, is undetermined.
