DAV to offer help
The Disabled American Veterans Mobile Service Office will be at Lawrence County Career Link, 102 Margaret St., New Castle, Pa., from 9 a. m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 18. A DAV national service officer will be there to counsel veterans on benefits and services available and help them file claims. The service is free and it is not necessary to be a DAV member to receive DAV services, Brenda A. Renner, director of the Lawrence County Dept. of Veterans Affairs, said.
20-year Navy veteran
Navy Chief Petty Officer Dennis C. Fitzgerald, son of Lois M. Fitzgerald of Sharon, Pa., and Dennis C. Fitzgerald of New Castle, Pa., recently retired from active duty after 20 years of service.
Fitzgerald, who joined the Navy in January 1985, most recently served with Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity, Norfolk, Va. He is a 1984 graduate of Sharon, Pa., Senior High School.
Serving in Marine unit
Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Robert F. Kontnier and Pfc. Matthew E. Ernst are among about 2,100 Marines and sailors assigned to the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which recently conducted operations in Najaf, Iraq.
Kontnier, son of Robert D. Kontnier of Negley, is a 1983 graduate of Leetonia High School.
Ernst, son of Charles Ernst of Struthers, is a 2000 graduate of Struthers High School.
Aviation machinist mate
Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Dustin C. Mintern, son of Melissa D. Richmond of Warren, and Paren E. Mintern of Burghill, graduated from the two-month Aviation Machinist Mate course at the Naval Air Training Command, Pensacola, Fla. Also, he was promoted to lance corporal and received a Letter of Appreciation for being class leader.
Mintern is a 2003 graduate of Badger High School in Kinsman.

Navy: Navy Seaman Apprentice Megan L. Seigfried (Austintown Fitch High School, '02), daughter of Pamela L. and David J. Seigfried of Youngstown; Seaman Apprentice Laura A. Mraz (Boardman High School, '03), granddaughter of Richard and Carol A. Mraz of Boardman; Seaman Apprentice Angela M. Cogswell (Warren G. U.S. Military Academy: Cadet Lauren Nicole Teal (Salem High School, '04), daughter of Ronald and Lynn Teal of Salem.
Matthew L. Dunleavy has graduated from the Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps Leader Development and Assessment Course at Fort Lewis, Wash. Dunleavy is the son of Dennis P. and Nancy A. Dunleavy of New Middletown. He is a 1999 graduate of Springfield High School.

Arrive for duty
Air Force Reserve Tech. Sgt. Bert M. George and Reserve Staff Sgt. Mike T. Sakony have arrived for duty at the 910th Airlift Wing at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna.
George, a supply technician, is the son of Melvin D. and Marjorie E. Bert of Jackson Center, Pa. He graduated in 1975 from Lakeview High School, Stoneboro, Pa., and received a bachelor's degree in 2003 from Pennsylvania State University-Penn State Shenango, Sharon.
Sakony, a medical administration specialist with five years of military service, is the son of Michael and Michelle Sakony of Hermitage, Pa. He is a 1998 graduate of Kennedy Catholic High School in Hermitage.
Army Lt. Col. Diane L. Martino, formerly of Youngstown, conducted a 40th anniversary celebration Friday for the Pittsburgh Army Recruiting Battalion, of which she is the commander, at the 99th Regional Readiness Command in Coraopolis, Pa.
Martino is a graduate of Youngstown schools, was the Distinguished Military Graduate from the Reserve Officers' Training Corps program at Youngstown State University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in law administration, and received regular Army commission in June 1985. She also holds a master's degree in executive development for public administration from Ball State University, Muncie, Ind. She became commander of the Pittsburgh Recruiting Battalion on July 11, 2003.
