VFW District 8 meeting
NEWTON FALLS -- Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) District 8 will meet at 10 a.m. next Sunday at VFW Post 3332 on LaFrance Avenue.
Retired Air Force general
BUTLER, Pa. -- Retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Wilma Vaught will be the keynote speaker at a Women's History Month program offered by the Butler VA Women Veterans Committee. The program, free and open to the public, will be at 1:30 p.m. March 19 at the Succop Theater, Butler Community College, College Drive, Butler. Vaught, president of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation board of directors, will speak on the contributions and service to the nation by women in the military. Coalition task force
Army Sgt. Frederick Benson Jr., son of Frederick and Joyce Benson, of Warren, is a member of Coalition Joint Task Force 180, the lead military agency for operations in Afghanistan, which is charged with leading the battle against remnants of the Taliban regime and terrorists still in the country. Benson, a 1996 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School, is a cannon crewmember with the 321st Field Artillery normally stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C. In Afghanistan, living in a tent city near Kandahar Air Field, Benson provides security for a civil affairs unit that works with the civilian communities to rebuild the country.
Taking command
Navy Capt. Thomas C. Nicholas, son of Marie N. Peterson of New Wilmington, Pa., has been named commanding officer of Amphibious Construction Battalion 2, Sea Duty Component, Norfolk, Va. Nicholas is a 1979 graduate of Knoch High School of Saxonburg, Pa., and is a 1983 graduate of the Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md.
New commander
Army Capt. Andrew D. Rieger is the new commander of the Ogden Recruiting Company, Salt Lake City, Utah. Rieger, a recruiting company commander, is the son of Atty. Gilbert L. and Virginia T. Rieger of Vienna. His wife, Jordana, is the daughter of Edward W. Martin of Cortland and Kathleen R. Tatman of Centerville, Ohio. He is a 1991 graduate of Mathews High School, Vienna, and a 1995 graduate of the Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.
Petty Officer 1st Class
Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Paul D. Rusu, son of Denise A. Capuzello of North Jackson, was promoted to his current rank while serving at Navy Recruiting District Ohio, Columbus.
Marine corporal
Marine Corps Cpl. Jeffrey J. Becker, son of Karen and Joseph E. Becker of Poland, was promoted to his current rank while serving with Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station, Iwakuni, Japan. He is a 1999 graduate of Struthers High School.

Vehicle mechanic
Army National Guard Pvt. Andrew C. Gibson graduated from the heavy-wheeled vehicle mechanic advanced individual training course at Fort Jackson, S.C. He is the son of Charles and Kathy Gibson of Youngstown, and graduated in 2000 from a home-school program.
Mortuary affairs
Army Pvt. Tyler R. Green graduated from the mortuary affairs specialist course at Fort Lee, Va. Green, assigned to 262nd Quartermaster Battalion at Fort Lee, is the son of Melody J. Green of East Liverpool and Thomas I. Green of Wellsville. He is a 2003 graduate of East Liverpool High School.
Airman leadership
Air Force Senior Airman Kenneth S. Greco graduated from the five-week Airman Leadership School at Langley Air Force Base, Va. Greco, a tactical aircraft maintenance journeyman with the 1st Equipment Maintenance Squadron at Langley, is the son of Shirley J. Greco of East Palestine and the grandson of Joanne Sanderson of New Castle, Pa. He graduated in 1998 from East Palestine High School.
Basic hospital
Navy Hospitalman Alex B. Sauvageot, son of Tammy J. Phillips and Terry J. Bigley, both of Austintown, graduated from the 14-week Basic Hospital Corps School at Naval Hospital Corps School, Great Lakes, Ill. Sauvageot is a 2002 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School.
Combat engineer
Marine Corps Pvt. Scott A. Bowman, son of Gerry J. Bowman of Lisbon, graduated from the Combat Engineer Officer Course at Camp Lejeune, N.C. He is a 2003 graduate of Southern Local High School, Salineville.
