LOWELLVILLE Society plans competition for winemakers

LOWELLVILLE -- Amateur winemakers will compete next Saturday for first-, second- and third-place medals in the second annual Mount Carmel Society's Wine Taste Competition.
The competition is open to all winemakers and will feature medals for both red and white varieties.
Last year, 25 winemakers collectively entered 48 varieties, including one entry from a California winemaker, said Jim Iudiciani, event chairman.
A panel of celebrity judges will award medals; wine taste attendees also will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite varieties.
Competitors must supply a minimum of three bottles of wine and arrive by 4:30 p.m. There is no entry fee. All entries will be eligible for a raffle of winemaking supplies.
Wine tasting begins at 6 p.m. and is open to anyone 21 years old or older. Tickets are $10.
Hors d'oeuvres and macaroni will be served with each admission. Sausage sandwiches will be available for sale. There also will be a cash bar, Iudiciani said. Entertainment and dancing begin at 9 p.m.
Call (330) 727-2565 to register or for ticket information.
