Youngstown State University's hiring of Joseph Serowik as a forensics science instructor is being questioned in light of Serowik's work being probed in Cleveland, where he previously worked as a police lab technician. Here's Serowik's professional background, as well as that of other finalists for the job.
JOSEPH SEROWIK, CLEVELAND
Employment: Scientific examiner for city of Cleveland Police Department crime lab from 1987 until this summer. Consultant for Tri-state Laboratories, Youngstown.
Qualifications: Eleven years of experience teaching graduate and undergraduate students as a guest lecturer. Served as part-time instructor at YSU from 1993 to the present.
Education: Bachelor's degree in biology; master's in forensic science.
KHALID LODHI, INDIANAPOLIS, IND.
Employment: Forensic scientist at the Indianapolis Marion County Forensic Services Agency since 2001. Previously, senior scientist at ReliaGene Technologies Inc. from 2000 to 2001.
Qualifications: Experience in forensic biology, molecular biology, toxicology and biochemistry. Developed a forensic DNA database. Taught undergraduate courses in biochemistry at Barani Agriculture University in Rawalpindi, Pakistan.
Education: Bachelor's degree in botany, chemistry and zoology. Master's in biochemistry; doctorate in biological sciences.
RICHARD VADE BON COEUR, REYNOLDSBURG, OHIO
Employment: Director of forensic sciences at Central Ohio Technical College, Newark, since 2003. Previously professor at Hocking College, Nelsonville, where his specializations included criminalistics, investigations and criminal justice systems.
Qualifications: Nearly 30 years of experience in law enforcement and college-level teaching.
Education: Bachelor's degree with emphasis on criminalistics and law enforcement; master's in education with emphasis on post-secondary education.
GARY RINI, CLEVELAND
Employment: Forensic science educator, trainer and consultant since 1995. Consultant and instructor in criminal investigation training course at a community college. Previously, commander with Woodridge, Ill., police department and forensic services manager with Naperville, Ill., police.
Qualifications: Forensic expert with nearly 30 years of experience as a crime scene investigator, forensic laboratory analyst, expert witness, manager and administrator.
Education: Bachelor's degree in psychology/criminal justice. Master's in forensic science.
