NEW YORK-PENN LEAGUE Scrappers sweep to stay in playoff contention



The Scrappers won 8-2 and 4-3.
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers remained alive in the New York-Penn League playoff race with a doubleheader sweep of the Jamestown Jammers Saturday.
After winning the opener 8-2, the Scrappers took the nightcap 4-3 in eight innings.
Chris Gimenez led off the eighth with a single and went to second on a bunt single by Wyatt Toregas.
After a sacrifice advanced both runners, Teo Encarnacion had an RBI single to left scoring Gimenez for a 4-3 lead.
The Scrappers (37-32) trail Hudson Valley (36-29) by one game in the race for the league's wild card spot. Mahoning Valley has seven games remaining this season, all on the road.
In the opener, the Scrappers collected nine hits but seven went for extra bases.
Leaders
Brett Parker had a double and a home run and Toregas collected a double and a homer. Parker had two RBIs and Toregas drove in three, one with a sacrifice fly.
Mario Matulich homered and Brian Finegan and Gimenez doubled.
The Scrappers led just 3-2 after five innings then scored twice in the sixth and added three runs in the seventh.
Tony Sipp (3-1) pitched the first five innings, yielding just five hits. He struck out 10. Matt Knox replaced Sipp and gave up only one hit in two innings.
