Bocce tournament open to public
Proceeds will benefit ill or disabled children in the three-county area.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The second annual Van Sickle Foundation Bocce Tournament will be held Sept. 11 at the Italian American Veterans Centre on Calvin Street as a benefit for "R" Kids Foundation.
The event will take place in the heart of Brier Hill, Youngstown's "Little Italy," where participants will be treated to Old World Italian food and music. The entry fee for a team of four is $250. The food and music will also be available to spectators for a donation of $25.
The event is spearheaded by board members Joe Naples and Sam Naples Jr. Named as honorary chairman for this year's benefit event is Samuel Naples Sr., 90-year old Brier Hill resident known as "Fourteener."
Robert H. Van Sickle started the Van Sickle Foundation 10 years ago to help children with special needs who often slip through the cracks of medical assistance. The foundation purchases special items required for ill or disabled children in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.
The foundation is comprised of an all-volunteer board of local business leaders, and 100 percent of all funds raised are used for children in the three-county area.
