Phone cards for troops
The Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary are sponsoring Operation Uplink, a program to keep America's military personnel in touch with their loved ones by distributing courtesy prepaid telephone cards to hospitalized veterans and active duty troops overseas.

Air Force retirement
Air Force Reserve Senior Master Sgt. Edwin C. Montgomery has retired after 38 years of military service. Before retirement, Montgomery, a 1964 graduate of Boardman High School, was a flight engineer superintendent with the 910th Airlift Wing's 757th Airlift Squadron at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station, Vienna.
His sister, Jean H. Montgomery, lives in Boardman.
DEPLOYED
To Afghanistan
Army Maj. Louann Tucker, stationed with the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii, has been deployed to Afghanistan. Tucker, a 1984 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School, is a daughter of Phyllis Ruse of Austintown.
She graduated in 1989 from Kent State University with a degree in human resources and was commissioned a second lieutenant. Before being assigned to Hawaii, she was stationed at Fort Jackson, S.C., where she attended Webster University and received a master's degree in management.
When she returns to Hawaii, she will be joined by her husband, Richard, and sons, Laeden and Collin.
ADVANCED TRAINING
Fleet combat
Navy Seaman Queen Martino, daughter of Kamar Allah and Mary Porter of Farrell, Pa., has graduated from Operations Specialist School at Fleet Combat Training Center Dam Neck, Virginia Beach, Va. Martino is a 2000 graduate of Farrell High School.
Signals collection
Marine Corps Pfc. Trevor R. Claypool, son of Terri Thompson of Rome, Ohio, and Walter Claypool of Warren, graduated from the Communications Signals Collection and Processing Course at Naval Technical Training Center, Corry Station, Pensacola, Fla.
Claypool took the course as a prerequisite for entrance into a cryptologic technician technical branch specialized course.

Air Force: Reserve Airman 1st Class Chad A. Miller (Lakeview High School, Cortland, '03), son of Linda and Edward Miller of Cortland.
Army: Pvt. Nathan A. Walker, son of Melinda and Gary Holsopple of Columbiana.
MILITARY ACADEMIES
Cadet training begins
Joseph W. Sabat Jr. has entered basic cadet training at the Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., in preparation for entering the first academic year at the academy. He is the son of Joe and Debbie Sabat of Howland and is a 2004 graduate of Howland High School.
ROTC
Leadership training
Daniel T. Christy has graduated from the four-week Army ROTC -- Reserve Officers Training Corps' -- Leader's Training Course at Fort Knox, Ky. Christy, a student at Kent State University, is the son of Karl A. and Marcia D. Christy of Mercer, Pa. He graduated in 2002 from Mercer Area High School.
