Scrappers back to .500 with a rout

Mahoning Valley got a quality effort from four relievers.
BATAVIA, N. Y. -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers registered season highs in runs and hits as they defeated the Batavia Muckdogs 15-9 at Dwyer Field Saturday.
The win -- their sixth in their last seven starts -- puts the Scrappers (28-28) back to .500 again in the New York-Penn League.
The Muckdogs (24-30) had things their way early, enjoying leads of 3-0 in the second inning and 6-3 in the third before the Scrappers started their offensive onslaught.
Teo Encarnacion led the 17-hit attack with four hits including a double, but he was not alone in multiple hits.
Brian Finegan finished with three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored.
All in the act
Every man in the Scrappers lineup scored at least once.
Besides the offensive fireworks, the Scrappers got a quality effort from four relief pitchers.
After starter Nelson Hiraldo was touched up for nine hits and six runs in three innings of work, Matt Haynes, Justin Pekarek, Chip Southerland and Hector Santana yielded just three runs on five hits in the final six innings.
The Muckdogs used a walk, a single and a double to take a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
In the top of the third Argenis Reyes and Finegan singled and Chris Gimenez homered to left, tying the game.
Reyes leads the NYPL with 74 hits and Gimenez has nine homers, second best in the league.
The Muckdogs used a double and three singles to take a 6-3 lead in the last of the third, chasing Hiraldo.
Butia homers for fourth time
The Scrappers scored five times in the fourth, punctuated by a two-run homer by Mike Butia. He now has four home runs.
Finegan singled in two runs in the fifth to make it 10-6.
Tim Montgomery tripled in Brett Parker in the sixth and Fernando Pacheco followed with an RBI single, making it 12-6.
Butia drove in Finegan in the seventh to increase the lead to 13-7.
In the ninth the Scrappers erased all doubt by sending seven men to the plate.
Parker doubled and scored on a single by Encarnacion.
The Muckdogs will play at Eastwood Field today at 2:05 p.m.
