PA. PARKS | McConnell's Mill
A day camp and programs about plants and mammals are on tap this weekend and next at McConnell's Mill State Park, near Portersville, Pa.
Incredible edibles: This 90-minute program, starting at 2 p.m. today will focus on the types of plants that are safe to eat, as well as when to harvest the plants and how to prepare them. Samples will be available.
Touch and Grow day camp: This free, three-day camp will be for children ages 4 and 5 and will run from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday in the Kildoo picnic area. Life cycles, adaptations, characteristics, habitat and communications of various reptiles will be explored. To register your child, call Jackie Kline, park naturalist, at (724) 368-9320.
American Indian evening: Participants will have a chance to hear various nature stories as told by American Indian storytellers. Bring something to roast, a roasting stick and a chair to this event, which starts at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Kildoo ball field.
Raccoon baiting: From mid-August through mid-September, airplanes will be dropping cookies with a rabies vaccine inside in an effort to stop the spread of the disease. This program, slated for 2 to 3 p.m. next Sunday in the Kildoo picnic area, will focus on why raccoons are being vaccinated, who is conducting the program, and whether household pets are safe if they eat one of the cookies.
