ON THE SIDE. . .
This and that from the world of Valley politics.
FILING DEADLINE: Thursday is the filing deadline to place questions, issues, and liquor options on the Nov. 2 general election ballot. Several county, community and school tax issues that failed during the March 2 primary and/or the Aug. 3 special election are expected to be in front of voters again during the November election.
Also, Thursday is the deadline to file nominating petitions to run for the Mahoning County Court judicial seat held by David D'Apolito, who is seeking re-election. David J. Gerchak is expected to challenge the judge for the position.
New challenger: There's a change in the Republican challenger to State Rep. L. George Distel of Conneaut, D-99th. Jim Von Tesmar of Ashtabula withdrew from the race for personal reasons.
Replacing Von Tesmar is Bill Pikor of Trumbull Township, a member of the Ashtabula County Republican Party's executive committee, and a technical account manager for National Plastics and Chemical Corp., a Columbus-based company. This is Pikor's first time running for public office. Distel has served as a state legislator since March 1999.
The 99th Ohio House District includes all of Ashtabula County, and Bloomfield, Greene, Gustavus, Kinsman and a portion of Mesopotamia townships in Trumbull County.
