School district plans public event

COLUMBIANA -- With three new administrators in the district this year, Columbiana schools will have an administrative meet and greet night at 6 p.m. Aug. 23 in the high school commons area.
Superintendent Ron Iarussi, who moved from high school principal to superintendent this summer, will attend along with Tim Saxton, high school principal, and Rachel Scull, Joshua Dixon Elementary principal.
Iarussi said the public event will be the first opportunity for the community and many of the staff to meet the new administrators.
Iarussi also told school board members at Wednesday's meeting that Columbiana Schools will offer online learning to pupils in kindergarten through 12th grades through a program with Jefferson County Educational Service Center.
Iarussi said pupils can choose from 68 different courses from language, math, social studies or science core courses to electives such as courses for college entrance exam preparation.
The program will be available for Columbiana pupils as well as home-schooled pupils in the area, he said.
Online learning also can be of benefit to pupils enrolled in summer school or those who want advanced or enrichment credits.
Full-year online courses have 36 lessons and pupils can work through them at their own pace, Iarussi said. Some pupils may work through a course in six or eight weeks, while others take much longer, he said.
