Officials accepts athletics director's retirement

AUSTINTOWN -- The school board voted Tuesday to accept the retirement of district Athletics Director Richard Kenney effective July 1, 2005.
Superintendent Stan Watson described Kenney, who has worked for the district for 30 years, as an "icon of Austintown athletics." The board did not discuss how it will replace Kenney.
Wendy Beck, president of the Lloyd Elementary Parent Teacher Association, also told the board that the PTA is set to receive a $20,000 grant from the Mahoning County Green Team to help pay for the installation of a $32,000 recycled rubber surface at the school's playground. The ground is covered with gravel that the PTA has paid $500 to replace every two years, Beck said. She said the PTA is in the process of raising an additional $12,000 to cover the rest of the cost of the rubber surface and that she hopes that the surface can be installed next year.
Beck also noted that the PTA, not the school board, recently paid to put up a fence at Lloyd Elementary. She said the school board has received calls from some residents concerned that it had spent money on the fence.
