SOAP SCOOP Daytime TV news

AN UNEXPECTED "DAYS" RECAST: Less than a month after launching Charity Rahmer as its new Belle Brady, "Days of Our Lives" has recast the role. Starting Tuesday, Martha Anne Madison will be playing the coveted part. "The producers felt that the full potential of the role was not being realized and decided it was better to make a change sooner rather than later," Days executives said in a statement. Speaking of major "Days" roles, Nadia Bjorlin appears on the show as Chloe on Friday, as both "Days" and "Passions" leave their audiences hanging while the shows go on a two-week hiatus during the Olympics, returning Aug. 30.
SOAP SPECIAL: While NBC turns its attention to sports, ABC is hoping to lure viewers who are missing their soaps. Bob Guiney of "The Bachelor" will be commentator on "The Wide World of Soaps," scheduled to air in spots during the three ABC soaps and on "The View" from Aug. 16-27. The spots will feature Olympic-style reporting from Guiney as well as soap stars about their characters, the great fights and the passionate love scenes.
SIGNED: Corbin Bernsen has been signed to "General Hospital" as John Durant, Carly's biological father, starting Sept. 3. Carly encounters John as the result of an emotional journey into her past, but John appears to be on a collision course with Carly's husband, Sonny.
LEAVING: Benjamin Hendrickson is leaving his role as Hal on "As the World Turns," a part he has played for almost 20 years. With Hal involved in a front-and-center story line, the part is being recast, and a strong choice is Randolph Mantooth, who filled in for Hendrickson last year. David Lago exits his role as Raul on "Young and Restless" Friday, as the character heads off to college.
SPECIAL SPOT: Miss Teen USA Tami Farrell guest-stars on "Passions" today, as Endora's baby sitter.
