INTERSTATE 80 Cops detain four illegal immigrants from four separate traffic stops
Two of the stops were made in East Lackawannock Township.
MERCER, Pa. -- State police said they nabbed 50 illegal immigrants in four separate traffic stops on Interstate 80 over the weekend, but only four were kept in custody.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office ordered the others to be released, police said.
The first traffic violation stop occurred around 1:30 p.m. Friday in the eastbound lanes at milepost 24 in Wolf Creek Township.
Police said 18 Hispanic men and women, all in this country illegally, were in the vehicle, but ICE agents directed that only one woman be detained. The others were released, police said.
The second stop for a traffic violation occurred around 12:45 p.m. Saturday, also at milepost 24 in the eastbound lanes in Wolf Creek Township.
Police said this time they found 16 people, all of them illegal immigrants, in a Chevrolet van. One person was held and the others released.
The third traffic violation stop was around 8 a.m. Sunday at milepost 15 in the eastbound lanes in East Lackawannock Township.
This time, police found 12 illegal immigrants in a Ford van. Two of the people were detained and the others were released, police said.
The last stop, for a vehicle traveling 83 mph in a 65 mph zone, occurred around 8:50 a.m. Sunday also at milepost 15 in East Lackawannock Township, but this time in the westbound lanes.
Police said they found four illegal Mexican immigrants in the vehicle and all four were later released.
